As a transgender Latina artist, my experiences have deeply informed and inspired my work. Being raised in El Paso and now residing in Houston, I have faced numerous obstacles related to my gender identity. Through my art, I explore the fragility of the human experience, whether through individual struggles or the broader environmental impact of human actions. As someone who is disconnected from my own cultural roots, I strive to explore my heritage in non-traditional ways, using my unique perspective to create new and innovative forms of expression.

Academic Community:

Lucy Carranza's academic journey at the University of Houston was not merely a solitary pursuit of knowledge but a vibrant and collaborative experience that brought her closer to an exceptional community of artists. One standout figure in this community is Francis Giampetro, her mentor during her four years of college.

Francis Giampetro, with whom Lucy worked closely, played an indispensable role in shaping her artistic path. It was through his guidance, expertise, and unwavering inspiration that she acquired much of her knowledge and honed her creative skills. Francis's mentorship went beyond academic boundaries, providing Lucy with invaluable insights that continue to enrich her artistic pursuits. 

 The academic community at the University of Houston introduced Lucy to a diverse array of remarkable artists, spanning across staff, faculty, and fellow students. This environment of artistic diversity fostered collaboration, creative cross-pollination, and a rich tapestry of experiences. It is within this community that she drew inspiration, shared ideas, and forged lasting connections that have contributed significantly to her artistic vision.

Needle Felting Workshop Instructor - RedBud Gallery Houston, TX

January 2024

• Lucy Carranza welcomed participants to a needle felting workshop, emphasizing her background as a multidisciplinary artist.

• She ensured safety by explaining proper felting needle use and the need for adult supervision for young children.

• Demonstrated basic needle felting techniques and shared personal insights and experiences related to this art form.

Visitor Service Associate - Houston Center of Contemporary Craft

November 2023 - Present

• Guest Experience: responsible for ensuring that every guest felt welcome, informed, and well cared for. I provided detailed information about the art on display, exhibitions, and events, enhancing their overall experience.

• Space and Artwork Security: My role included monitoring and safeguarding the center’s premises and the valuable artwork on display. I took measures to ensure the safety and integrity of the space.

• In-Depth Knowledge: To assist guests effectively, I maintained a comprehensive understanding of HCCC, its exhibitions, events, and resources. I delivered these materials to anyone seeking information, enhancing their engagement with the center.

• Flexibility: I served as a versatile team member, ready to provide support in various capacities. This included assistance with maintenance, marketing, workshops, and other tasks as needed by HCCC.

• Event Support: I actively participated in the successful execution of events, workshops, and initiatives, contributing to the dynamic and creative atmosphere at HCCC.

Gallery/Studio Renovation Artisan - Houston 4231 Bellaire Blvd

October 2023 - Present

• Was entrusted with ensuring the structural integrity of the gallery and studio spaces. This included diagnosing and repairing foundation issues, stabilizing the building, and creating a secure foundation for artistic endeavors.

• Brought an artistic touch to the renovation process by carefully selecting color palettes and designs to enhance the aesthetics of the spaces. My goal was to create visually appealing and inspiring environments.

• Worked closely with artists to understand their specific needs and added functional features to the spaces, such as storage solutions, display areas, and innovative lighting.

Home Renovation Artisan - Pearland, TX

November 2023 - Present

• Flooring Artistry: I excel in the repair and installation of acrylic floors, where my creative vision meets practical skills. I bring a fresh and artistic perspective to flooring projects, transforming spaces into unique works of art.

• Home Appliance Revitalization: I am adept at diagnosing and repairing a variety of home appliances, ensuring they function optimally. My attention to detail and technical knowledge contribute to extended appliance lifespans.

• Structural Improvement: Beyond the surface, I work on structural improvements within homes, addressing issues such as repairs to walls, ceilings, and fixtures. I aim to create a harmonious and functional living environment.

Fabricator - (HAA)Buffalo Bayou Park, Houston, TX

September 2023 - Present

• Fabricated a set of detailed molds for 1ft by 1ft Monarch Butterfly sculptures.

• Ensured the high-quality casting of the butterflies by meticulously avoiding air bubbles in both molds and castings.

• Utilized lightweight materials for casting, making the sculptures suitable for suspension on poles along the park's walking trail.

• Contributed to the project's educational aspect by assisting in the installation of QR codes at eye level for viewers to access information about the butterflies.

Temporary Gallery Supervisor- RedBud Art Center, Houston, TX

• Opened and Closed the RedBud Gallery and maintained a professional setting for visitors interested in Fine Arts

• Held an understanding of the artist in the main gallery space as well as the layout, rules, and policies for the gallery

Studio Assistant / Fabricator - Corn Maze, Houston, TX

• Collaborated with Artist and University of Houston professor, Lorena Molina, to create a captivating corn maze installation

• Transformed creative idea into reality, showcasing installation at Assembly Gallery and Sawyer Yards

• Sourced corn from local Texas farmers, hand-picking high-quality corn stalks for the project

• Ensured safety and quality by meticulously cleaning and preparing the corn, removing harmful substances

• Demonstrated practical skills by operating large cargo trucks and handling transportation logistics

• Crafted durable crates using woodworking techniques, providing the foundational structure for the corn maze

• Arranged cornstalks within crates, seamlessly blending artistic vision with practical execution

• She expertly joined two wooden panels using biscuits and wood glue, demonstrating precision in the construction process.

• Lucy’s dedication to quality was evident as she hid the seam between the panels through careful sanding and precise spackling, resulting in a seamless and visually appealing appearance.

• Lucy contributed to the creation of a sturdy base for the sliding door, ensuring stability and functionality.

• She actively participated in painting and spackling the walls, showcasing her commitment to creating an aesthetically pleasing and well-prepared backdrop.

• Lucy’s role extended to adding reinforcements and anchors to the wall, a critical step in ensuring the secure hanging of the sliding door track.

• Apply principles of Sculpture such as safety, how to use tools, and building techniques in order to help manage a classroom setting
